Why this exists
When I started, I could not find anyone at SAGE to ask how open source actually worked. Not how to write code — how to find an issue worth solving, how to talk to a maintainer, what happens after you click “create pull request”. I worked it out slowly, in public, and got a lot of it wrong first. This community exists so the next person does not have to do that alone.

Introduce yourself in #intros. Say your year, your language, and what you have built — if anything. Zero experience is a fine answer.

Claim a good first issue
Every repo below has issues labelled good-first-issue. Comment on one to claim it. One issue at a time, so everyone gets a turn.

Open the pull request
Small, focused, and described. A moderator reviews it first, then it comes to the tech lead for merge.

Get merged, get counted
Merged PRs count toward your Hacktoberfest badge and move you up the weekly leaderboard. Reviews count too.

Outside GSoC he has landed fixes upstream in rsync and across the CCExtractor stack — including a bug that had been sitting in rsync since 2004. Fixed a 21-year-old bug in rsync
--backup --backup-dir --delete had been silently dropping empty directories since 2004. Traced the routing in delete_item(), fixed it with rmdir-first validation and Solaris EEXIST handling.
Traced 3,087 HTTP 500s to one lazy-load chain
Read 5,697 stack frames to find a SQLAlchemy lazy-load cascade, then fixed it with targeted eager loading and null guards.
Machine-readable JSON reporting
Added --report-format json with a versioned schema across 25 files, and corrected has_any_captions() for DVB and Teletext. Validated against 166 media files.
Stopped 49,086 test rows failing silently
One missing guard on an empty output path was quietly corrupting the whole test result set. Small diff, large blast radius.
